Concept DesignAll products start as an idea. Concept design is the process of formalising that idea into a 'product concept' that can be presented visually and accurately specified for production.

Form and Function
The two most important aspects of any product design are its form and function. Using a combination of research, brainstorming, sketching, clay and cardboard modelling, and digital 3D modelling, we define the overall form and function of the required product. Depending on the brief, the product may have more aesthetic or more functional importance, but both these aspects need to work in harmony for the concept design to be successful. |
Material
Choosing the right materials to match the budget and to support the form and function of the product is essential. At Newton Workshop, that means keeping abreast of what materials are available, finding suitable standard components, and also making wise ecological choices. |
Industrial Process
How will the product be made and in what quantities? Matching the right industrial manufacturing processes to the product's form, function and material, makes a product efficient to manufacture and achieves the desired quality and finish. Newton Workshop concept design takes into account the available industrial processes to ensure that manufacture of the product is achievable from the outset. |
Engineering and Prototyping
Before a product can be manufactured, the concept design needs to be carefully analysed, refined and resolved through a process of product engineering and prototyping.

Engineering
In the Engineering phase, the design is broken down into an assembly of easily manufacturable parts or standard components. To ensure accuracy and proper communication with suppliers, the design is usually resolved into detailed technical drawings, and files are generated for CAM (computer aided machining) or rapid prototyping. |
Prototyping
The prototype is a one-off production of the product and aims to be as close as possible to the actual item that will be manufactured. Depending on the complexity of the product, it may then go into testing. |
Testing
The prototype serves to test the chosen materials, manufacturing processes and functionality of each and every part of the design. After testing, the prototype may need to be tweaked or re-engineered before going in to manufacture. |
